About This Island
Fowl Cay is the rental where the boat keys come with the room key.
Six oceanfront villas, fifty acres of Bahamian private island, twenty-four guests at full capacity, and one powerboat parked at the dock of every villa with the gas tank unlocked and unlimited. After a short orientation on the first morning, you take your boat out into the Exuma Cays and bring it back when you feel like it. That is the proposition.
What the Exumas are, for context: 365 cays scattered across 120 miles of turquoise water in the centre of The Bahamas, photographed often, populated thinly, and reachable easily from Miami. The marine landscape is in the conversation for the most beautiful in the Caribbean. Fowl Cay sits in the middle of it.
How Fowl Cay Works
The all-inclusive model is the one most readers will recognise from other Caribbean resorts, executed without the small print most of them include.
- Every meal, every drink, every cocktail at the Hill House restaurant and bar: included
- Your villa's kitchen and bar, fully stocked, restocked daily: included, including premium-brand spirits and wine
- Your private 17- or 18-foot powerboat with unlimited fuel: included, parked at your villa's dock
- Professional fishing gear, water-sports equipment, kayaks, paddleboards, a Hobie Cat: included
- Gourmet picnic packed for the cooler when you head out for the day: included
- A golf cart for getting around the island: included
- Catch a grouper or a snapper on your boat and bring it back to the Hill House: the chef cooks it for you for dinner, also included
- Airport transfers from Staniel Cay: included
- 24-hour access to the Hill House dining room, open bar, pool, gym, and games: included
There is no tab. There is no tier. There is no concierge upsell on the third day. The rate quoted at booking is the rate that includes everything inside the resort's walls.
The Six Villas
Each villa is oceanfront, fully air-conditioned, fully stocked, with its own beach access, dock, golf cart, and powerboat. They are also genuinely different from each other, and the choice matters.
Lindon is the only one-bedroom villa, sitting on a low ridge above North Beach. The plantation-style design is classic, the interior modern, and the position breezy. It is Fowl Cay's honeymoon villa: a couple's villa, with a couple's beach steps from the front door.
Birdcage is a split-level two-bedroom on the island's highest ridge, with some of the most expansive panoramic views Fowl Cay offers across Big Major Harbor and the neighbouring cays. French doors open to terraces with sun beds, a barbecue, and steps that descend to a private beach and small dock.
Sweetwater and Bluemoon are the larger family villas, three bedrooms each, positioned in secluded spots near North Beach with large patio decks for groups who want to gather and stargaze.
Seabreeze and Starlight are the unusual ones. Octagonal in shape, treehouse-style, with sliding glass doors on every facet and wraparound wooden decking. Seabreeze sits on the south and highest point of the island directly over the blue-green shallows. Starlight is on a ridge just above it. Both feel like a hide built for two adults who wanted a view of every direction at once.
Across the six villas, capacity runs from a single couple in Lindon to twenty-four guests if all villas are populated to their maximums. The island has been booked as anything in between: a couple celebrating an anniversary, a family of five, two families travelling together, a multigenerational group of fourteen, and full-island buyouts for weddings and milestone events.
A Day, In Sketch
Coffee on your patio, looking out across the harbor. The fridge has been quietly restocked overnight. You decide where breakfast happens, which is wherever you want it to happen, and what time it happens, which is whenever you want.
After breakfast you walk down to your boat. The team has already loaded the cooler with the day's gourmet picnic. They have left an Exuma chart in the console, marked with that day's currents and a few suggestions for where the bonefish are running, where the snorkelling is good with this morning's tide, where the sandbars will emerge in two hours and disappear in five.
Then you go.
The morning could be a snorkel at Thunderball Grotto, the underwater cathedral made famous by the 1965 James Bond film, twenty minutes from your dock. Or Pig Beach at Big Major Cay, where the swimming pigs of the Exumas meet boats at the shoreline (the pigs are the Bahamas' most photographed mammals, and they are not photogenic by accident, they are charismatic). Or Staniel Cay Yacht Club for a rum punch and a stone-crab lunch on the dock. Or a deserted sandbar that the chart has marked for low tide that morning, where you anchor and have the cooler picnic with no one else for a kilometre in any direction.
The afternoon is the next thing you decide. Maybe more reef. Maybe a return to the freshwater pool at the Hill House. Maybe the tennis court that nobody asked for but everyone uses by day three. Maybe an hour with a book in the hammock at your villa, looking back at the boat you left tied up.
Dinner is at the Hill House, or on your villa's deck, or on the beach. The chef cooks what was caught that day, what the boats from Nassau brought in, and what your group has indicated preferences for. The bar is the bar all night. The pool table and dartboard live in the Hill House for the part of the evening that has not gone to bed yet.
The Setting and the Property
Fowl Cay is fifty acres of low Bahamian island in the centre of the Exuma Cays, surrounded by some of the clearest water in the Atlantic. Three private beaches around the property, palm-fringed, with the calm shallows that have made the Exumas one of the world's most photographed marine landscapes.
The island has no neighbouring hotels, no passing cruise ships, and no public access. The closest inhabited cay is Staniel Cay, a short boat ride away, where the airstrip runs charter and scheduled service.
A freshwater swimming pool, a tennis court, a small games and exercise area, the Hill House restaurant and bar, and dedicated staff quarters complete the built footprint. The rest is beach, palms, and the water.
Whole-Island Buyout
For weddings, milestone birthdays, and corporate retreats, all six villas can be booked together as a private buyout. The configuration handles up to 24 overnight guests in the villas and up to 50 guests for events on the island, with ceremony spaces on the beach, the harbor-view lawns, and inside the Hill House dining pavilion. Outdoor music runs until 11pm, indoor until 1am.
This is the booking mode for the family that wants the wedding nobody else can quite replicate: a private Bahamian island, six villas distributed across fifty acres, six powerboats for the wedding party to explore the Exumas in, and the entire 365-cay marine landscape as a backdrop.
Access
- By air: Miami to Great Exuma International Airport (GGT) is approximately 75 minutes direct on American Airlines. Nassau also serves the route, with a short hop onward to Staniel Cay, the closest inhabited cay
- By private aircraft: Staniel Cay's 3,030-foot paved runway accommodates private jets up to mid-size, with customs and immigration available on arrival
- By boat: from Staniel Cay to Fowl Cay is approximately five minutes by the resort's boat
- By yacht: the resort can accommodate private yacht arrivals at the moorings, with full provisioning available
A family flying from Miami in the morning is on their villa's beach by lunch and on their own powerboat by the afternoon.
What Fowl Cay actually rents is not a villa. It is a fifty-acre private island, a fully stocked kitchen, a chef who cooks what you bring back, and the keys to a powerboat with the gas tank unlocked. The rest, including which of the 365 surrounding cays you visit first, is up to you.
